| A New Initiative to Tackle Poverty
29/09/2006
Between 18 and 28 September, a team of seven Good Shepherd Sisters met in Rome to discuss strategies for assisting the development of Good Shepherd initiated enterprises, micro-credit and marketing projects. Members of the team were Pranee Sitti (Thailand), Saba Tensaew (Ethiopia), Meera Varickamakel (India), Elsa Calero (Peru), Elise Rasch (Europe), Maureen McGowan (USA) and Anne Manning (Australia).
In their work together, the team identified several key issues that need to be addressed within the network. These included issues relating to the structure of projects for sustainability, product development, the need for pricing policies and - importantly - the need for a greater emphasis on training for both the sisters involved in establishing the projects and the women participants.
Over the next few months, members of the team will complete a mapping of the Good Shepherd economic justice development network. This will assist the team in addressing the training needs with greater focus. Work will be begun on draft policies to guide all projects in addressing key issues and on a manual to assist those groups that are in the initial phases of project development.
The establishment of this team gives greater focus to the economic justice initiatives of the Good Shepherd Sisters internationally. Some of these projects are profiled in this web site.
